I used this postcard as as illustration for a blog post over two years ago. In the time I've had it, I've puzzled over it and wondered about the three women in the scene. I just finished watching a slideshow of George Masa photos that is included on the dvd, The Mystery of George Masa, and was pleased to see this was a Masa photo.
Masa made extra money by having his photos made into postcards by the Asheville Postcard Company. They took his black and white photos and colorized and altered them. The results are often odd, as in this one. In the original, the two standing women are not wearing all brown uniforn-like outfits. Part of my problem with this postcard has always been the clothing that tended to suggest camp uniforms. In reality, these were women of the Carolina Mountain Club, who were often placed in Masa's later photos to give a sense of scale to them. They wore boots to the knee, breeches topped with man-styled shirts and hats pulled over their heads - a very snappy look!
