When Bad Things Happen to Great Vintage

Vintage clothing people are usually really pleased when celebraties wear vintage to high profile events.  Above you have model Natalia Vodianova  wearing a Fortuny gown that she said was a gift from her boyfriend.  The event was The Met Gala to celebrate the opening of Model as Muse.

Unfortunately, it seems as if things went horribly wrong at a post-gala party.  Somehow a fellow partyer stepped on and ripped the hem of the dress.  You can read about it here, at Style.com.

This sort of thing has happened before.  Remember Kate Moss's torn-to-tatters 1930s gown?

And I've said this before - not all vintage clothing should be worn.  Perhaps the dress is sturdy enough to wear to a gala where people are pretty much just standing around posing for cameras, but to wear a valuable vintage dress to a party where there is all kinds of activity is just asking for heartache.

I know that some people will argue that there is no point in having a dress you can't wear.  Actually I can think of quite a few reasons to own a dress that can't be worn, but then I have dozens of frocks that would fit into that category.

I feel the same way about this as I do making permanent changes to a vintage garment.  There are so many wonderful dresses out there, why would you want to alter or endanger an older dress, especially one as prized as a Fortuny?

Preaching to the choir here, Lizzie! :) We had a similar discussion on flickr, sparked by a vintage hippie dress, when I expressed the opinion that I would hate to see anyone shorten it. Fortuny, is sacred, and not to be worn around town like this! Good heavens. The color is absolutely divine...big sigh.
